Study Abroad for Language Students

At 香港六合彩开奖结果2023, language students undertake a transformative learning experience in the sense that as they enhance their linguistic skills and cultural understanding, they become better prepared to negotiate today's multicultural global society. Many of our students enroll in other summer, semester, or year-long language programs throughout the world. Students receive departmental credit for all pre-approved courses of study abroad.

Faculty-Led Programs

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers two faculty-led summer programs.

French Study Abroad in Tours and Paris

Summer A, 2024, May 10 - June 8

  • Spend four weeks in the beautiful Loire valley of France
  • Study French with students from all over the world in classes adapted to your level and taught by native speakers.
  • Take excursions to the famous castles of the Loire, local museums, and other sights.
  • Spend three days and two nights in Paris.
  • Earn 6 credits toward graduation.
  • Experience the culture and food of “The Garden of France”
  • Scholarships available for French majors & minors

The Academic Program

Students will take an immersive French language course, either FOL 2952 Intermediate Foreign Language Study Abroad (3 cr), or FOL 3953 Advanced Foreign Language Study Abroad (3 cr), at the renown Institut de Touraine. In addition, all students will take FRT 3550 Faces of France (3 cr), a culture course on contemporary France.

Students must complete an application (including an interview with the faculty leaders) and, if accepted, make all payments by the deadlines. Students will register for the two, 3-credit-hour classes during the regular registration period for summer classes and will pay the usual tuition and fees for these classes.

Life in Tours

Tours, sitting at the confluence of the Loire and Cher rivers, is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is the capital of the Loire Valley, the “Garden of France.” It boasts a beautiful old city with half-timbered houses. It is also close to the celebrated wine-making areas of Vouvray, Chinon, and Sancerre.
Students will live with a French family (private room, shared bathroom), eat breakfast and dinner with their hosts, and experience an authentic immersion into the life of students in France. The city of Tours, home to the Université de Tours, is known for its lively student life.
We will take excursions to visit castles, museums, local markets, and medieval abbeys.

Trip to Paris

During our stay in Tours, students will travel to Paris for three days and two nights, staying at a youth hostel located in the center of “the City of Light.” We will visit some of the most iconic places in the world.

Tentative Itinerary

  • Saturday, May 11: Arrive in Paris at the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport. Take a TGV train to Tours. Meet host family.
  • Sunday, May 12: Orientation walk in Tours
  • Monday, May 13: First day of classes. Classes will be weekday mornings.
  • Wednesday, May 15: First castle excursion; excursions will be Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays.
  • Excursions to Chenonceau, Blois, Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau, Villandry, and Cheverny. There will also be excursions to historic sites in Tours.
  • May 31-June 2, excursion to Paris
  • Friday, June 7: Last day of classes.
  • Saturday, June 8: Students return to Paris via train, take their flights back to JAX.

Travel Information

Students purchase their own airline and TGV train tickets and commit to arriving in Tours by Saturday, May 11. The Paris-CDG Airport has a TGV station inside which makes train connections to Tours easy.

After the end of classes, students will use their return train ticket from Tours to Paris-CDG to return to JAX.

Students may participate in pre- and/or post- study abroad travel on their own, but this is separate from the 香港六合彩开奖结果2023 program.

Costs

Estimated total cost: $5,973. This includes:

  • Payment to 香港六合彩开奖结果2023: $3,160: includes French language classes, excursions, lodging with a French family, weekend travel Paris-Tours, and 50 meals with a host family.
  • Expenses that students will pay on their own: approximately $2,814: for airfare, R/T train transportation from Paris to Tours; 25 lunches, and personal items.
  • 香港六合彩开奖结果2023 tuition and fees: approximately $1,300 (six credits).
  • If prices increase, students are responsible for any increase in program costs.
  • If prices decrease or come in under estimates, all money left over will be returned to the students.

Financial Assistance

  • Majors and minors in French and Franco-phone Studies are eligible to apply for the Harriet LeMaster and Cascone Family scholarships.
  • Declaring a minor is easy to do.
  • Students are also encouraged to apply for the SAILS scholarships offered by the International Center.

  • Be 18 years of age.
  • Be an undergraduate.
  • Hold a valid passport.
  • Have the equivalent of two semesters of college-level French.
  • Attend all pre-trip meetings and complete all required paperwork on time.

Spanish Study Abroad Program in Burgos

The Academic Program 

The Spanish Spain Languages and Cultures in Contact program offers students a language and culture immersion experience.  The program consists of four weeks, during which the students take two Spanish courses at the 3000 level: Languages and Cultures in Contact and an Intensive Language course taught by accredited instructors from the University de Burgos. As a part of the Languages and Cultures in Contact course, there will be a five-day trip to Segovia, Granada, Toledo and El Prado Museum in Madrid, two one day excursions to historic neighboring villages and to Bilbao and the Guggenheim as well as daily local visits community activities in Burgos. The students' immersion experience will continue outside the classroom through family homestays, which helps them enhance their conversational skills and engage in the daily life and customs of local Spaniards. Families provide three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). 

Students must complete an application (including an interview with the faculty leaders) and, if accepted, make all payments by the deadlines. Students will register for one 3-credit-hour class during the regular registration period for summer classes (the other is already included in the program cost) and will pay the usual tuition and fees for these classes. 

Cost

The estimated cost for the program is $3,410*. This price includes: 

  • Lodging with host family
  • Entrance fees/activities as outlined in itinerary, including a four-day trip to Segovia, Granada, Toledo and El Prado Museum in Madrid, excursions to neighboring historic villages and to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao;
  • University of Burgos tuition (3 credit course);
  • International Accident & Sickness Insurance;
  • 24/7 in-country emergency support;

*The price does not include tuition for one three-hour 香港六合彩开奖结果2023 course, airfare, and personal expenses. Personal expenses may include but are not limited to optional trips you may take and all personal purchases.

  • Students are strongly encouraged to apply for the SAILS scholarships offered by the International Center.

  • Anyone interested in applying for a study abroad scholarship will need to complete the "Data Consent form" in Academic
 Works.
  • All study abroad scholarships will be available for applications starting November, 9th.
  • In order to receive a study abroad scholarship in Spring 2025 (for a spring or summer trip), students will need to go to OneStop/Financial Aid and request a one-time increase in their "Cost of Attendance" budget to reflect elevated expenses for the study abroad program. That should be done as early as possible in Spring term so the scholarship distribution can be facilitated before the trip.

  • Have the equivalent of Intermediate college-level Spanish.
  • Comply with all Covid-19 requirements of the Spanish government.
  • Attend all pre-trip meetings and complete all required paperwork on time.
