Health Informatics

Mission Statement

The Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) prepares students for careers as Clinical and Nursing Informaticists, Health Information Managers, Data Analysts, Chief Information Officers, and other health information roles in any organization that utilize healthcare data in decision making. The program is offered through the Department of Health Administration in the Brooks College of Health in partnership with the Coggin College of Business and the College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction.

The MSHI is considered a STEM degree and provides foundational knowledge to prepare students for board certification in Clinical Informatics, Nursing Informatics, Information Management, and Data Analytics. Job prospects for students in health informatics are extremely promising given the explosive growth of technology and big data in healthcare. Graduates of this STEM program will be able to pursue careers working with health data, electronic health records, clinical systems, health information standards including privacy, and medical coding applications. 

Assessment Approaches

Student learning outcomes are assessed using a variety of direct and indirect measures such as discussions, exams, research papers/projects, and oral presentations. Direct assessments are accompanied by grading rubrics used by instructors to provide detailed feedback on student performance.

Knowledge of Literature of Discipline (req)

  • Explain the scope and breadth of health informatics as a profession, including relevant healthcare policies; laws and regulations specifically governing privacy and health information; and how healthcare, computer science, and information science intersect to provide safety and accuracy in patient care.                 
  • Describe health information systems database architecture, including retrieval, mining, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data.

Independent Research/ Professional Practice (req)

  • Analyze and interpret data from electronic health records and medical research databases to improve clinical decision support methods, data modeling, and workflows.           
  • Explain technical project management and system analysis via specific medical research and clinical practice problems.

Professional Skills (opt)

  • Describe the importance of working with diverse teams in a health care setting including clinicians, biomedical and computational scientists, and information/knowledge management professionals.
