Health Science - Public Health

Program Mission Statement

The purpose of the Public Health program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level public/community health positions, Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification, and graduate studies. Graduates will be skilled in the five core areas of public health; they will be trained to plan, implement, and evaluate health programs, develop theoretically-based strategies, and apply public health research, advocacy, and technical skills. Faculty scholarship in environmental health, health education and promotion, epidemiology, and public health policy and our external community partnerships with many public health organizations, such as YMCA, Brooks Rehabilitation, and Baptist Medical, compliment our curriculum.

Assessment Approaches

Communication skills are assessed through course assignments that require students to assemble and communicate health education information. Discipline-specific content knowledge and skills are assessed through course assignments that require students to plan, deliver and administer programs that respond to community needs for health education. Critical thinking is assessed through course assignments that require students to evaluate and conduct research on community needs for health education.
