Gabrelcik Named to Team USA For 49th Walker Cup Match
Senior adds to his astonishing accolades by earning a bid as one of 10 Americans to compete in the 49th Walker Cup Match, as selected by the USGA's International Team Selection (ITS) working group on Sunday evening.
"Nick [Gabrelcik] is Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û2023's second-ever Walker Cup participant and the first American player," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "This is about the biggest honor for an amateur golfer and I couldn't be more proud to see him accomplish this."
Gabrelcik is set to become the second Osprey in program history to compete in the Walker Cup, as Kevin Phelan played in the event in 2013 for Team Great Britain & Ireland. He will become the first player for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û2023 to represent Team USA, which will be played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland from Sept. 2 to Sept. 3.
He joins Austin Greaser, Stewart Hagestad, Ben James, Dylan Menante and Preston Summerhays as new team selections. The six newcomers join Nick Dunlap, David Ford, Gordon Sargent and Caleb Surratt, all of whom were previously selected for the team.
The Walker Cup Match is a 10-man amateur team competition between the USA, Great Britain and Ireland. The match is played over two days with 18 singles matches and eight foursomes (alternate-shot) matches. The Old Course has hosted eight previous Walker Cups, more than any other venue, most recently in 1975, when the USA defeated GB&I, 15½-8½, led by future U.S. Open champions Jerry Pate and Curtis Strange.
